Our House

Is a very, very, very fine house. Here are some inside pics for you all. Not any of the upstairs yet, but they are coming. The furniture is all in today, or so the rumor goes.

And on the Ninth Month, He Rested

God created the world in six days. It took Don Alfonso (plus numerous other skilled craftsmen and artists) nine months. Finally, he can rest. At least for a little bit before he tackles other projects. Let's give him a round of applause, shall we? Because he's brought my parents home.

A Porch Is a Porch

Well folks, the porch is finally finished. I'm really surprised at what the screen adds to the house. I can't quite explain it, but it makes it look different somehow. It doesn't seen as HIGH as it did without the screen. Anyway, it works. And that's the most important thing. I'm curious as to what's happened next door to the blue house right now. Hopefully my trust photographer will enlighten us in the comments section.

You Screen, I Screen

We all screen for porch screens! Good morning everyone. I thought I'd try to brighten up this sad week with a few pictures. It's been a while since I've had much to say about 626, but the finishing touches are happening. I hope everyone has a good weekend.

Appliance Compliance

Well folks, here they are. The latest state-of-the-art fancy-pants kitchen appliances we've all been waiting for. Looks like a million bucks, if you ask me. Looks like a magazine kitchen. Or a Food Network Studio Kitchen. If only I had a video camera with which to film myself cooking up a storm. I used to play "Cooking Show" a lot as a kid, stirring a bowl of cookie batter with gusto, all the while smiling out into the empty den at the invisible cameras.
Sp we skipped spring here in Oxford. Went from 35-degree nights in early March to 91-degree days in late March. Came in like lion and out like bowl of two-alarm chili. But, I am looking forward to the blistering summer because for the frist time, we can enjoy that Gulf Breeze I keep hearing about on the front porch of 626.
Have a swell weekend, dedicated readers. I'll be in touch.

Counter Culture

God created the world in seven days. This house has taken a little bit longer. But, I think it's safe to say that we have rounded third and are headed into home. Baseball season is upon us and I really had no choice but to use that analogy.
Today's pictures are pretty cool. The countertops have been installed at 626! Dad says they're so strong you could tap dance on them. Now who wouldn't love to see that! It took all those big guys to bring them in. Once guy had to get in the sink so they could fit it in right. Fascinatin'!
Next I hope we can see some sink pictures, then maybe some appliances. We're getting so close I can already taste the trout amandine.
May the force be with you.

Stair Thee Well

Greetings loyal readers. I hope you are all warming up wherever you live. Just when I thought spring was up and rolling, Oxford has managed to have a few chilly days, but if my allergies tell me anything it's that the bees in the trees are gearing up for my favorite season. Spring Break is just around the corner, the Easter Bunny is working overtime to have all his eggs decorated in time, and my sweet tooth is ready. (I gave up sweets for Lent this year and it's proving to be much more difficult than I had anticipated....) Come April 8, bring on the Cadbury Eggs.

Of course, springtime not only brings April Showers and May Flowers, it also brings a big blue house on Second Street. So, without further ado, here are the pictures of the day.

The stairs. There have never been stairs in the Cassady house. Unless you count the pull-down variety that folded up into the attic. I'm diggin' the cubbyholes under the stairs. Reminds me of Harry Potter's "Cupboard under the Stairs" on Privet Drive.

The kitchen. The kitchen ceiling is the coolest thing about the whole downstairs in my opinion. The "pressed tin" panels harken back to the old downtown shopping days of yore. When we still bought our shoes at Gryder's Buster Brown and our clothes at Salloum's instead of horrid places like Shoe Carnival and Cato. Around Oxford lots of the shops still have these kinds of ceilings. All the cabinets have doors and hardware now.

Lastly there is Molly, the Official Adopted Cat of the Post-Katrina Era. She sits on a newly recovered chair that belonged to my grandparents. Lookin' sharp Molly! Show me love!

And the Oscar Goes To...

It's up to you! Below is a list of all the house names the readers have submitted. Let me know which ones you like the most. I've heard from the house-builders that they are somewhat leery of using blue in the title just because what if they want to paint it another color down the road. Keep that in mind. Also, as you can see, we have more pictures today. Shout out to my photographer. I think we're in the home stretch.
1. 7 West [isnt the house 7 doors west of hewes? if it's 6, then scratch it because 6 doesnt have the ring of 7.]

2. Aisling House [Aisling means dream in Gaelic]

3. Azure

4. Blueberry Hill

5. Blue Monday

6. Blue Bayou

7. Bonnie Blue Bungalow

8. Casa Cassady

9. Cassady Casa

10. Easter House (better holiday than Thanksgiving, which is for the 'yang-kees'; plus will be the first true holiday celebrated there; also, good for the color and a general sign of being a grateful person)
11. Fema Trailer

12. Katrina's Offspring

13. Maison Bleu

14. My Blue Heaven

15. Paddy's Pad (better if painted green)

16. Paint It Blue

17. Take Two

18. Tangled Up In Blue

19. Cois Dara (the i has the Gaelic slant over it) ...classic Irish house name. roughly translates to "Coast Oak Tree", which is kind of weird, but could be good for a house on second street. plus the gaelic is so pretty, who cares what it translates to. i'm not really sure how to pronounce celtic/gaelic words, but i bet we could find out exactly how to say it.

20. Second 626 Second

22. Second Heaven

23. True Blue

24. TWO BLUE
25. Monkey Hill [the highest point in new orleans is monkey hill in the audubon zoo]
26. Waterproof
27. Top O' the Hill [this is actually the name of a bar in chapel hill, but since the house is on a man-made hill of sorts, i thought it worked...]
28. Strawberry Fields [beatles, obviously]
29. Octopus's Garden [since the garden of the octopus is IN the sea and this house is BY the sea, then i thought why not... i was on a beatles thing]

We will also happily accept more suggestions.

Step Right Up!

Hey everyone! January's almost over. Hallelujah. Gotta love February. The shortest month!
I would like to annouce our new contest here at 626secondstreet.blogspot.com. The name of it is Name the House. All the news Second Street houses will have names, so put on your thinkin' caps and come up with some goodies. You can enter as often as you want to. The grand-prize winner (selected by the Cassy family, of course) will win an original painting of the new 626. Ain't that exciting? So, send in the names, people. You can either make suggestions on the comments here on the blog or e-mail me at sally.lyon@gmail.com. When thinking of name, consider everything: the location, the color, the Cassady family, whatever you want. Most important, though, have fun! The creative bird always gets the worm.
Have a fab weekend.

Proud to Be Title Free

Good afternoon readers of the blog. Today's pictures show the steady progress on the inside of 626. Looks like someone got to eat a box of Krispy Kremes. What I wouldn't give.... All we have in Oxford is Shipley's Donuts, and while tasty, Shipley's just don't have that special something you can only find in a genuine Krispy. Plus, Krispy is always open and almost always Hot-N-Now. For those of you who don't have the Krispy in your town and have never experienced a Hot-N-Now, right-out-of-the-icing-waterfall donut, you're really missing out.
Anyways, these pictures are relatively self-explanatory. I hope everyone has dynomite weekend plans. We sure don't. Well, we are going to try and see if this new bowling alley in Oxford is any good... But, really, I mean how good can a bowling alley be? To tell you the truth, I'm saving my energy for the Saints/Bears game Sunday. I don't really want to talk to much aboput that though... Don't want to jinx them. But everyone please think of Deuce and Reggie and Drew and all the Saints tonight when you say your prayers. Who dat!
